Dear Parent/Guardian(s), The Westampton Township Public Schools participates in state and local standardized testing during specific periods of time throughout the school year to provide vital benchmarking data on student growth and progress toward state standards of learning as prescribed by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Students participate in testing based on their grade level and program assignment. Here is the annual testing schedule, subject to change for inclement weather as well as other unforeseen variables: • MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing – This is a web-based assessment tool that is aligned to state standards and adapts to student performance to determine student current learning levels. It is provided through a non-profit education organization called NWEA (Northwest Education Association). It is a tool that is only used locally, at the district level, to guide instruction and personalize lessons to your child’s needs. o For Grades K-5, this test is administered three times a year during the September, January, and April/May. o For Grades 6-8, this test is administered twice a year during September and March. • NJSLA(New Jersey Student Learning Assessment) – This is the required NJ state standardized assessment tool that is administered to students in Grades 3-8 during April and May of each school year. The assessment tool indicates student performance on grade level learning standards and provides a measure of growth from one year to the next for each student. o For Grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 – English Language Arts and Math o For Grades 5 and 8 – English Language Arts, Math, and Science • ACCESS for ELL (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners) – This test is administered to our English Language Learners only, Grades K-8, once a year during the months of March and April. This assessment provides data about English Language proficiency. • DLM (Dynamic Learning Maps) – This test is administered to a small percentage of our special education students in Grades 3-8, whose disabilities indicate that general state assessments are not appropriate, even with accommodations. DLM assessments offer these students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts in English Language Arts, Math, and Science (Grades 5 and 8 only). Detailed testing schedules with specific dates will be shared for each group of students prior to test administration. The following are some suggestions to help your child be successful during this testing process. It is extremely important that students are present and on-time during testing days. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast will also help to provide the energy your child needs to focus on the testing. It is also suggested that you dress your child in layers. Children do better on tests if they are physically comfortable, rather than hot or cold. If your child is nervous about the test, please share that we only ask all students to try their best. These helpful hints are all our students need to perform at their own personal best on the test. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s principal with additional questions. Educationally Yours, Dr. Rachel Feldman District Testing Coordinator
