Mendez Class

As we quickly approach the halfway point of the school year, students in 6th and 7th grade social studies have been busy learning content and practicing their historical thinking skills in new and exciting ways.

The 6th grade students are enjoying our lengthy unit about Greece, which included holding our very own classroom Olympic Games. The prestigious winners of our 2022 Olympic Games were the city-states of Athens in Period 1 and Delphi in Period 2. Although there were no medals to give, students enjoyed their winnings by choosing a prize out of our classroom prize bin. The Olympic Games required students to utilize their knowledge of Greece, as well as critical thinking, problem solving, and athletic skills. In 7th grade, students spent the week before Winter break applying their knowledge of the 13 colonies to re-write the lyrics to their favorite holiday songs. Many students even performed their renditions in front of the class, which got the entire classroom into the holiday spirit.

As we enter into the new year, our goal is to continue to improve our historical thinking skills that transcend social studies and can be used by students in all areas of their lives. We will also keep students engaged in current events, particularly those that highlight important Constitutional issues, so that students can become more civic-minded individuals and citizens.
