growing crystals

This spring, students in Mrs. Adams’s science classes completed a unit of study on rocks with a culminating activity that enabled them to “grow” their own crystals. Materials used for this experiment included petri dishes, Borax, hot water, and food coloring. Each student got to choose what color food dye he or she wanted to make the crystals with. Some even chose to mix a couple of different colors together to create a unique shade. After the classes mixed the materials together, they were left to sit out over the weekend. Students were amazed to come back on a Monday morning to vibrant homegrown crystals!
