The 4th graders in Mrs. Van Camp Language Art classes will be reading the novel “Shiloh”. It is a moving look at the best and the worst of human nature. This book, written by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, is a Newbery Medal Book and has been given many awards. It takes place in West Virginia and is about an 11-year old boy who finds love in a beagle dog, but it comes along with some trouble too. I grew up about 15 minutes from where this story takes place and I will read it in my West Virginia/Ohio dialect. The students will enjoy reading this story and also learn many skills. We will talk about choices that lead to different consequences, using communication to resolve conflicts, and what dialogue reveals about a person. Students in the past have loved this book. They can relate to the age of the boy and what he stands for. I know the students will love this book as much as Mrs. Van Camp loves it!
