For the last two weeks, sixth grade Health classes have been going nuts about nutrition. Students started by researching the changing trends in USDA nutrition guidelines from 1992 to present day. We took a look at foods from around the world and students were able to share how their own culture and heritage impacts the foods that they eat. Foods like jollof rice, mofongo, matzah, and mango lassi are some of the students' favorites that they have at home. We’ve reviewed food groups with a relay race to see what team can fill their plates first and their creativity really comes out when drawing their favorite foods. Next our classes will start discussing the nutrients in foods so they can analyze food labels to be healthy consumers.
