At the start of the school year, Mr. Powers’ 8th grade social studies classes were given many lessons on the importance of the stock market and the basics of understanding how the stock market works.  The class was able to read different articles and documents that put the stock market in perspective.

As a class activity, each student was given an opportunity to pick a company they would be interested in buying stock in.  Students had to do research on the stock price and the different indicators of whether the company is a good buy or not.  They also had to research the company’s situation and how it fits into society.

The stock market activity fit in nicely with the Great Depression.  Students were able to recognize the causes and effects of the Great Depression and how there was a profound impact on society especially during the 1930’s.

Hopefully, students will be able to apply the lessons learned in basic saving  and retirement planning as they move forward in their life.  Students have time on their side.
